The Ketogenic Diet is a widely recognized approach for managing drug-resistant epilepsy. Some early research also indicates it may offer potential benefits for conditions such as certain cancers, metabolic diseases, psychiatric disorders, depression, Alzheimer's, autism, ALS, MS, Parkinson's, and migraines.
The Ketogenic Diet
The Ketogenic Diet (KD) has existed since the early 1900s, when Dr. Russell Wilder sought a safer alternative to fasting for children with epilepsy. The concept of ketone bodies, which the diet produces, goes back to 500 BC.
The KD diet is very high in fat, with moderate protein and low carbs. The goal is to train the body to produce ketones. The exact amounts of fat, protein, and carbs you eat are based on ratios. For example, a 2:1 ratio means you consume 2 grams of fat for every 1 gram of protein and carbs combined.
These ratios are just a starting point because everyone’s body reacts differently. Ultimately, blood ketone levels are used to fine-tune the diet.
Clients are taught to hit their target ratios and plan meals using tools like Cronometer. Over time, as their metabolism improves and they become more skilled at managing their diet, some may move to a less strict version depending on their goals.
Nutrigenomics Precision Nutrition
A customized ketogenic diet is a way of eating tailored to fit your specific needs and goals while following the basic principles of a keto diet.
This involves adjusting your balance of fats, proteins, and carbs, calorie intake, food choices, and eating times. These adjustments are based on age, gender, activity level, body type, metabolism, food preferences, dietary restrictions, and overall health goals.
A customized keto diet usually includes healthy fats from foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fatty fish, and moderate amounts of protein from poultry, eggs, and lean meats. Carbs are kept low, mainly from non-starchy vegetables and small portions of low-carb fruits.
To ensure the diet is working, you might track blood ketone levels, blood sugar, cholesterol, and body measurements and adjust the plan as needed.
A customized ketogenic diet aims to support blood sugar, boost energy, and improve overall health. It is tailored to each person's personal needs and lifestyle.
