Guy came to see me after he had undergone brain surgery when his melanoma metastasized to his brain, and he was looking to take control of his nutrition to address his stage IV diagnosis and preserve cognition.
Guy's Main Complaint
Guy's focus was to arm his body to heal from his brain surgery, maintain and improve cognition, and amplify the effects of his treatments while reducing side effects.
Our Approach
Preclinical studies have demonstrated improved structural and functional outcomes in traumatic brain injury (TBI) models, mild TBI/concussion models, and spinal cord injury in the presence of ketones.1
We focused on a well-formulated ketogenic diet for Guy with the goal of therapeutic levels of ketone production (3+) to aid in healing the brain. This required a macronutrient split of 80% fat, 15% protein, and 5% carbohydrates.
Guy's genetic profile required that we focus on monounsaturated fat sources and limit saturated fat as much as possible. We focused on olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil, fatty fish, olives, avocados, pili nuts, and macadamia nuts as the primary fat sources.
Based on his genetics, Guy also needed more omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation. Recent studies show that n-3 PUFAs display neuroprotective properties and benefit cognitive function with aging.2 So, we made fatty fish such as sardines, salmon, and mackerel the center of Guy's protein needs.
We focused on correcting his vitamin D deficiency in partnership with his integrative oncologist and removing all toxins from his environment.
Guy's Outcome
Guy's case stabilized, and his memory improved. His immunotherapy was successful, and he avoided the worst side effects. His thyroid did suffer a bit, but his integrative oncologist came to the table with support to prevent significant damage.
As you can see from Guy's note above, he's doing quite well. He continued to run his finance business and his cattle ranch through treatment with little disruption during treatment, and he is thriving today.
