Watermelon is a great dessert when cutting the junk food out of your life and incorporating more whole food. This melon brain is a gorgeous, er creepy, way to serve your guests something sweet that won't damage their health at your next Halloween shindig.

Who said, carving was just for pumpkins at Halloween. Carve a melon for your centerpiece and show off your mad skills...don't worry, I've included a how-to video so you'll be carving like a pro!

I'd serve this by cutting the brain in half and placing it upside down on a platter as the centerpiece with the other half balled and placed around the centerpiece. This keeps the art of the melon brain intact while providing an easy way to serve the watermelon without hacking into it at the party.

This is a great party snack to prepare ahead of time. It keeps well and you can make a lot of it at once. This recipe calls for a mini watermelon, but you can use any size you want. You can also use any kind of melon you want. I think a cantaloupe would be fun since it's already got a really weird textured rind.

You can serve this melon brain alongside other creepy Halloween snacks like Halloween deviled eggs, zombie hand meatloaf, and apple bites. Decorate your party snack table with skulls and pumpkins and creepy crawlies. Your guests will eat it up!

Ingredients

  • 1 Small Seedless Watermelon
  • Vodka optional

Instructions

  • Use a vegetable peeler to remove the entire green rind, exposing the inner white rind.
  • Slice off the bottom of the melon to create a flat base that will keep it from rolling. With a toothpick, outline squiggly furrows that resemble the folded surface of a brain.
  • Finally, carve narrow channels along the tracings with a sharp paring knife (a parent's job) to expose the pink fruit beneath the rind.
