The Metabolic Theory of Cancer Reading List

Published: Feb 23, 2018 · Modified: Nov 12, 2022 by Heather Cooan, MBA, NTP, FDN-P, ONC · This post may contain affiliate links.

    Books on Cancer

These books really helped me gain confidence in my decision to trust natural and alternative cancer treatment. When I discovered The Metabolic Theory of Cancer, everything changed. My outlook on health and nutrition changed as well as my view of conventional medicine. I became the ultimate skeptic and started questioning everything. I highly recommend these books to anyone dealing with a cancer diagnosis and navigating their way through treatment options

Once you understand the metabolic theory of cancer and how treatments like radiation and chemotherapy work, it just makes sense to change your lifestyle regardless of the cancer treatment you choose. The point is, you have to be educated in order to make a decision on cancer treatment. I'm really big on informed consent after everything I've been through. Only you can choose the right treatment for you and it's crucial that you have all the information you can get your hands on.

Many of these are pretty dense with science and research. I found it much easier to digest this material in an audio format. You should be able to find all media types available for each of these on Amazon.

Radical Remission by Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D.

Kelly A. Turner, the founder of the Radical Remission Project, uncovers nine factors that can lead to spontaneous remission from cancer—even after conventional medicine has failed. While getting her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Turner, a researcher, lecturer, and counselor in integrative oncology, was shocked to discover that no one was studying episodes of radical (or unexpected) remission—when people recover against all odds without the help of conventional medicine, or after conventional medicine has failed.

She was so fascinated by this kind of remission that she embarked on a ten-month trip around the world, traveling to ten different countries to interview fifty holistic healers and twenty radical remission cancer survivors about their healing practices and techniques. Her research continued by interviewing over 100 Radical Remission survivors and studying over 1000 of these cases.  Her evidence presents nine common themes that she believes may help even terminal patients turn their lives around.

Radical Hope: 10 Key Healing Factors from Exceptional Survivors of Cancer & Other Diseases by Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D. and Tracy White

Real-life stories from survivors of cancer and other diseases who have used the 9 key factors from the New York Times best-selling Radical Remission, with updated research and a tenth key factor revealed.

Following the publication of the New York Times best-selling Radical Remission, researcher Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D., has collected hundreds of new cases of radical remissions--from cancer and now also other diseases--from across the globe. In Radical Hope, Turner explores the real-life application of the Radical Remission principles and the people who have chosen to take this journey.

Each chapter shares a survivor's in-depth story and their use of one of the ten key Radical Remission healing factors. Turner provides updated scientific research and new tips for each factor and unveils a tenth key factor for integration into your healing approach. Male and female, young and old, these survivors recognize that by taking ownership of their approach to healing, they are giving themselves the best chance for a longer and healthier life, with the ultimate goal of achieving remission.

With warmth, realness, and a true sense of hope, Turner shines the spotlight on the pure strength of the human spirit and offers steadfast support and guidance for making the unique and individual decisions that lead to a powerful journey of healing.

Tripping Over the Truth: The Return of the Metabolic Theory of Cancer Illuminates a New and Hopeful Path to a Cure by Travis Christofferson

In the wake of the Cancer Genome Atlas project's failure to provide a legible roadmap to a cure for cancer, science writer Travis Christofferson illuminates a promising blend of old and new perspectives on the disease.

Tripping Over the Truth follows the story of cancer's proposed metabolic origin from the vaunted halls of the German scientific golden age to modern laboratories around the world. The listener is taken on a journey through time and science that results in an unlikely connecting of the dots, with profound therapeutic implications. Transporting us on a rich narrative of humanity's struggle to understand the cellular events that conspire to form malignancy, it flows like a detective novel, full of twists and cover-ups, blind alleys and striking moments of discovery by men and women with uncommon vision, grit, and fortitude.

Ultimately we arrive at a conclusion that challenges everything we thought we knew about the disease, suggesting the reason for the failed war against cancer stems from a flawed paradigm that categorizes cancer as an exclusively genetic disease. For anyone affected by this terrifying disease and the physicians who struggle to treat it, Tripping Over the Truth provides a fresh and hopeful perspective. It explores the new and exciting non-toxic therapies born from the emerging metabolic theory of cancer - therapies that may one day prove to be a turning point in the struggle against our ancient enemy. We are shown how the metabolic theory redraws the battle map, directing researchers to approach cancer treatment from a different angle, framing it more like a gentle rehabilitation than like all-out combat.

Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer By Dr. Thomas Seyfried

The book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited. This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requiring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention. Support for this position is derived from a critical assessment of current cancer theories. Brain cancer case studies are presented as proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate.

World Without Cancer: The Story of Vitamin B17 by G. Edward Griffin

Mr. Griffin marshals the evidence that cancer is a deficiency disease - like scurvy or pellagra - aggravated by the lack of an essential food compound in modern man s diet. That substance is vitamin B17. In its purified form developed for cancer therapy, it is known as Laetrile. This story is not approved by orthodox medicine. The FDA, the AMA, and The American Cancer Society have labeled it fraud and quackery. Yet the evidence is clear that here, at last, is the final answer to the cancer riddle. Why has orthodox medicine waged war against this non-drug approach? The author contends that the answer is to be found, not in science, but in politics - and is based upon the hidden economic and power agenda of those who dominate the medical establishment. This is the most complete and authoritative treatise available on this topic.

The Metabolic Approach to Cancer: Integrating Deep Nutrition, the Ketogenic Diet, and Nontoxic Bio-Individualized Therapies by Dr. Nasha Winters, ND FABNO, L.Ac, Dipl.OM and Jess Higgins Kelley, MNT, ONC

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, cancer rates have increased exponentially―now affecting almost 50 percent of the American population. Conventional treatment continues to rely on chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation to attack cancer cells. Yet research has repeatedly shown that 95 percent of cancer cases are directly linked to diet and lifestyle.

The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is the book we have been waiting for―it offers an innovative, metabolic-focused nutrition protocol that actually works. Naturopathic, integrative oncologist and cancer survivor Dr. Nasha Winters and nutrition therapist Jess Higgins Kelley have identified the ten key elements of a person’s “terrain” (think of it as a topographical map of our body) that are crucial to preventing and managing cancer. Each of the terrain ten elements―including epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balance―is illuminated as it relates to the cancer process, then given a heavily researched and tested, non-toxic, and metabolic, focused nutrition prescription.

The metabolic theory of cancer―that cancer is fueled by high carbohydrate diets, not “bad” genetics―was introduced by Nobel Prize laureate and scientist Otto Warburg in 1931. It has been largely disregarded by conventional oncology ever since. But this theory is resurging as a result of research showing incredible clinical outcomes when cancer cells are deprived of their primary fuel source (glucose). The ketogenic diet―which relies on the body’s production of ketones as fuel―is the centerpiece of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Further, Winters and Kelley explain how to harness the anticancer potential of phytonutrients abundant in low-glycemic plant and animal foods to address the 10 hallmarks of cancer―an approach Western medicine does with drug-based therapies.

Their optimized, genetically-tuned diet shuns grains, legumes, sugar, genetically modified foods, pesticides, and synthetic ingredients while emphasizing whole, wild, local, organic, fermented, heirloom, and low-glycemic foods and herbs. Other components of their approach include harm-reductive herbal therapies like mistletoe (considered the original immunotherapy and common in European cancer care centers) and cannabinoids (which shrink tumors and increase the quality of life, yet are illegal in more than half of the United States). By addressing the ten root causes of cancer and approaching the disease from a nutrition-focused standpoint, we can slow cancer’s endemic spread and live optimized lives.

Fight Cancer With a Ketogenic Diet: Using a Low-Carb, Fat-Burning Diet as Metabolic Therapy By Ellen Davis, MS

The ketogenic diet is a natural, non-toxic metabolic therapy being studied and utilized for cancer prevention and treatment. It works because cancer cells are dependent upon a constant supply of blood sugar (glucose) to stay alive. Normal cells can make energy from both glucose and ketones (metabolic by-products of burning fat), but most cancer cells can only use glucose. Avoiding carbohydrates (starch and sugar) while enjoying delicious and healthy protein and fats will lower blood glucose and increase blood-ketone levels, resulting in a normal body state called nutritional ketosis. Research has shown that nutritional ketosis starves cancer cells while nourishing normal cells and strengthening total body health. This essential, fully referenced book is a practical guide for physicians, patients, and caregivers, and provides step-by-step instructions for customizing the diet and clear explanations of the cutting-edge research on ketogenic therapies being done by Dr. Dominic D’Agostino’s team at the University of South Florida and Dr. Thomas Seyfried’s team at Boston College. The ketogenic diet for cancer is based on the consumption of whole, fresh foods and it can be used in addition to standard care or as a stand-alone treatment in wait-and-see situations.
